⛵ Texas — Sailing Resources

Texas has one of the most diverse sailing environments in the country. Galveston Bay and Clear Lake (south of Houston) form the largest coastal sailing hub in the state — protected bay sailing with direct Gulf of Mexico access and one of the most active racing scenes anywhere on the Gulf Coast. Corpus Christi Bay offers open-water sailing with consistent south winds and a gateway to the ICW. On the lakes, Austin's Lake Travis is a destination sailing lake with scenic hill country coves, good steady wind, and a thriving yacht club scene. The Dallas–Fort Worth area is served by Lake Lewisville, Grapevine Lake, and others. The combination of year-round warmth, Gulf access, and big inland lakes makes Texas one of the best sailing states in the US.

Boater Education (TPWD): Anyone born on or after September 1, 1993 must complete a TPWD-approved NASBLA boater education course to operate a motorized vessel over 15 hp, a PWC, or a sailboat over 14 feet on public water. Certification is lifetime once earned. Approved online courses: Boat-Ed.com/texas and the BoatUS Foundation.
Hurricane Season: June 1 – November 30. Gulf Coast and bay marinas have documented hurricane plans. Know your marina's procedures and have a plan for your boat before the season starts. The Texas coast has been hit by major storms including Harvey (2017) and Ike (2008).

🔍 Marine Surveyors — Texas

Texas has strong surveyor coverage in the three main sailing hubs — Houston/Galveston, Austin/Lake Travis, and Corpus Christi. Always use a SAMS (Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors) or NAMS (National Association of Marine Surveyors) credentialed surveyor for pre-purchase inspections. Most lenders and insurers require it.

Finding a Surveyor

  • SAMS — Find a Surveyor — filter by TX city (Houston, Galveston, Austin, Corpus Christi). SAMS surveyors are accredited and tested.
  • NAMS — Find a Surveyor — NAMS credentialed surveyors in Texas. Search by region.
  • Ask at Clear Lake Yacht Club, Austin Yacht Club, or Corpus Christi Yacht Club for current local recommendations — clubs always know who is doing good work in their area.
  • Call the dock master at Watergate Yachting Center or Northshore Marina at The Hollows — they see surveyors work regularly and can recommend by experience.

What to Expect in Texas

  • Gulf Coast boats: Expect osmotic blister inspection (warm, biologically active saltwater accelerates blistering), antifouling paint condition review, standing rigging corrosion checks, and through-hull inspection. Galveston Bay and Corpus Christi Bay are hard on bottom paint.
  • Lake Travis / freshwater boats: Freshwater extends gelcoat and hardware life significantly. Survey focus shifts to mechanical systems, rigging condition, and any trailering damage for boats that have been moved.
  • ICW/offshore boats: Full offshore inspection including life raft, EPIRB, storm gear, sea cocks, and structural integrity. Budget extra time for bluewater-capable vessels.

Notes for Texas Buyers

Always haul the boat for a pre-purchase survey — a waterline inspection alone is insufficient for used sailboats. Watergate Boatyard and Seabrook Shipyard (Clear Lake area) both have travel lifts and are commonly used for survey haul-outs.
On Lake Travis, moisture meter readings can be skewed if the boat has been sitting in fresh water for years with no bottom paint — get a surveyor familiar with freshwater lake boats, as standards differ from coastal surveys.
Insurance note: Texas Gulf Coast insurers increasingly require surveys for boats over 10 years old and may add hurricane coverage riders or restrictions. Confirm insurance requirements before closing on a purchase — survey timing matters.

Texas has one of the most active used sailboat markets in the South Central US. The Clear Lake / Galveston area is by far the largest hub — dozens of boats at any time from bay sailors to bluewater-capable cruisers. Lake Travis has a strong market for performance lake boats and cruising keelboats.
