⛵ Wyoming — Sailing Resources
Wyoming offers limited but scenic inland sailing on large reservoirs like Flaming Gorge (shared with UT, vast red-rock canyons and excellent cruising waters), Glendo Reservoir, Boysen Reservoir, Keyhole, and others. These man-made lakes provide protected yet breezy conditions with mountain backdrops. Facilities focus on fishing/power but support sailboats with slips, ramps, and transients at main marinas. Strong emphasis on recommended (not required) boater education. Trailer-sailors will find good public access; the scene is small but dedicated for those seeking remote high-plains sailing.
Boater Education
- Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) Boating Safety - Wyoming does not require a mandatory boating education certificate for recreational boat operators. However, completing a NASBLA/USCG-approved boater safety course is strongly recommended for all boaters (may qualify for insurance discounts and is required in many other states). Free or low-cost online options are available and accepted by WGFD.
Approved courses include Boat-Ed.com/wyoming and BoatUS Foundation (free online, WGFD-approved). No minimum age to take a course. While not mandatory in WY, the certificate is lifetime and useful for reciprocity or travel. Full details and links on the WGFD boating safety page. Always follow age and horsepower restrictions for youth operators.
Marinas & Harbors
Flaming Gorge Reservoir provides the primary large-water sailing in WY with full-service marinas offering transients. Glendo and other reservoirs have smaller but functional facilities focused on slips and access. Transients via direct or limited apps; book ahead for peak summer. Reservoirs can have wind and fluctuating levels (managed by Bureau of Reclamation); check conditions.
Flaming Gorge Reservoir (shared WY/UT)
- Buckboard Marina (McKinnon, WY side) - Full-service with boat slips (daily/weekly/monthly/seasonal), transients, fuel, store, RV park, cabins, rentals, and services. Good base for the reservoir's vast scenic waters and canyons. Open year-round in parts.
- Lucerne Valley Marina (near UT/WY border) - Full-service marina with slips, transients, fuel, pump-out, rentals, store, and restaurant. Popular access point with events via Lake Flaming Gorge Yacht Club.
- Additional: Cedar Springs Marina (southern end) with slips, fuel, rentals, and tours. Public ramps throughout the NRA.
Glendo Reservoir & Other Reservoirs
- B&A Marina (Glendo State Park) - Privately operated full-service with boat slips (daily/seasonal up to 30 ft, some with power/water), transients, rentals, lodging, restaurant, and store. Convenient for the large reservoir with good wind and access.
- Other: Boysen Reservoir, Keyhole Reservoir, Buffalo Bill Reservoir - public ramps and limited marina services; good for trailer-sailors. Check WGFD or state parks for current options.
Dockwa or direct reservations for transients. Flaming Gorge is the highlight for big-water cruising with red cliffs; Glendo for more local reservoir sailing. Many facilities seasonal; call ahead. Fuel, pump-out, and basic services at major spots. Strong winds common on open water; remote locations require preparation. Public lands provide excellent access for exploring these scenic high-plains waters.
Marine Surveyors
- Limited dedicated local marine surveyors in Wyoming due to the small inland boating scene. Owners often use traveling surveyors from neighboring states (e.g., UT, CO, MT) or regional firms serving the Rocky Mountain West.
- Use the official SAMS and NAMS directories filtered for Wyoming or nearby (search "travel" or Mountain West). Local marinas (Buckboard, B&A Glendo, Lucerne) and any clubs (Flaming Gorge YC) are good sources for current recommendations familiar with reservoir conditions, trailerable boats, and high-altitude/wind exposure.
Plan surveys well in advance; travel costs may apply. Local knowledge from Flaming Gorge or Glendo marinas is invaluable for these distinctive waters. Condition surveys for insurance or pre-purchase should account for the remote, scenic, and variable environments.
Brokerages
- Limited dedicated sailboat brokerage in Wyoming; most activity is private or through marinas focused on powerboats, fishing, and rentals. Inventory emphasizes practical trailerable sailboats suited to the reservoirs.
- Search current Wyoming sailboat listings on YachtWorld and BoatTrader. Local marinas (especially Buckboard and B&A) and any active sailing groups often know of boats for sale or have connections.
- Many WY sailors also monitor nearby UT, CO, or MT markets for more options. The market emphasizes versatile boats for these scenic but seasonal high-plains waters.
Work with marinas for local knowledge on value and condition (e.g., wind exposure, trailer needs, high UV). Private sales common through the small but active community around key reservoirs.
Sailing Clubs & Resources
- Lake Flaming Gorge Yacht Club - Active club with events, racing, and social activities on the reservoir. Welcoming for sailors enjoying the unique red-rock setting; good source for local knowledge and reciprocity.
- Additional activity on Glendo, Boysen, and other reservoirs through informal groups and public access. Check marinas or WGFD for current organizations.
- Wyoming Sailing Clubs - US Sailing
WY's sailing communities are small but passionate, centered on Flaming Gorge for big-reservoir cruising and events. Clubs emphasize fun and education on scenic high-desert waters. Many welcome guests—contact for programs or privileges. Strong safety focus given remote locations and variable weather. Public lands and marinas provide excellent access for exploring these dramatic landscapes. Growing interest in trailer-sailing the reservoirs.
