🇨🇦 Canadian Sailing Resources by Province
Canada has some of the finest sailing in the world — from British Columbia's Inside Passage and Gulf Islands to Ontario's Georgian Bay and Lake Ontario, the rugged Atlantic shores of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, and the St. Lawrence River. Select a province below for marinas, surveyors, brokerages, and local sailing resources.
Note: Recreational boating in Canada is regulated federally by Transport Canada — the same rules apply in every province. See the federal section below before checking provincial listings.
🇨🇦 Federal Requirements — Applies in Every Province
- Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC): Required to operate any motorized vessel in Canada. Online test available at BoaterTest.com and BOATERexam.com. Card is valid for life once earned.
- Sail-only (no motor): PCOC not required for vessels under sail with no auxiliary engine. However it is strongly recommended.
- Vessel registration: Vessels used on federal waterways or leaving Canadian waters must be registered with Transport Canada. Pleasure craft under 15 HP may use a provincial licence instead.
- Safety equipment: Transport Canada requires PFDs, throwable, sound signal, fire extinguisher, flares (offshore), and navigation lights — requirements vary by vessel size. Full list: TC Safe Boating Guide
- Clearance to/from USA: Crossing the border? US Customs: CBP Decal program or CBP One app. Canadian clearance: CBSA pleasure boat entry.
